Yesterday, I had a stimulating conversation with one of my small-LSP clients. After receiving some great feedback from him on a recent project, I decided to share a bit about my GAIT workflow. This inspired a discussion on how efficiency and quality gains can shift the value-chain equation in our industry.

Small LSPs are navigating a tricky landscape where end-clients increasingly expect almost-free, high-quality translations, sometimes turning to tools like ChatGPT for output with minimal effort and cost. While end clients may hesitate to pay for top-notch work, many would be willing to do so if we can find ways to enhance quality and reduce costs.

Here’s where our chance lies: Generative AI is a democratizing technology. It gives us the capability to achieve both of those goals at the small-scale level. By collaborating with our smaller LSP partners, we can explore untapped markets eager for exceptional translations.

In doing so, we must commit to three essential principles:

1. Learn the methodology

Dedicate yourself to mastering AI-enhanced translation processes. This ensures you’ll be positioned to deliver both higher efficiency and quality.

2. Do the work

AI is a tool to boost your production, not a shortcut to bypass the necessary effort for outstanding translations. Aim for better quality than ever before, making the AI enhance your role as a professional.

3. Communicate transparently

Keep your clients informed about what you’re doing, emphasizing the improving value you add. Stay focused on your bottom line, not on arbitrary per-word rates.

With these steps, we can build on the trust we’ve built with our clients and pave the way for new opportunities.

I’m not just saying this; I actually believe it.
