Here’s Why Having the “Power of the Key” Makes All the Difference!

Get and Enter Your OpenAI API Key Into CotranslatorAI

Prerequisites:

  1. Ensure you have already downloaded and installed CotranslatorAI.
    • NOTE: If you need to download the installer file, click the “Get CotranslatorAI” button at the top of any page on this website. This will take you to the free Starter edition download page, but all editions of CotranslatorAI use the same installer file. Enter your email address in the form on the Starter edition download to receive a download link by email. You can get the download link this way as many times as you need regardless of whether you’ve already done so before.
  2. If you purchased the Intermediate or Advanced edition, enter your license number.

Obtain your OpenAI API key:

  1. Sign up for an OpenAI enterprise account:
  2. Access the OpenAI settings:
    • Once logged in, navigate to the “Settings” section of your OpenAI account. At the time of preparing these instructions, the “Settings” icon is shaped like a gear and is located in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Add billing information:
    • OpenAI provides a small initial credit (e.g., $5), which can be used with some basic models to process a small amount of data. However, to get continuous use and to have access to the latest models, you’ll need to put some money (e.g., $5-10) into your account.
    • Therefore, we recommend you enter your billing information by going to “Billing” to enter your desired payment method.
    • OPTIONAL 1: Set up an auto-recharge option to automatically top up your balance (e.g., when it drops below $5, add $25).
    • OPTIONAL 2: Set a usage limit to control monthly spending (e.g., $10/month).
  4. Create an API key:
    • After logging in to your account, click on “Dashboard” in the top menu.
    • Next, click “API keys” in the left menu.
    • Making sure the text at the top-left of the screen says “Default project”, click the “Create New Secret Key” button.
    • Name the API key (e.g., “Test Key”).
    • Click “Create secret key.”
    • Upon generation, copy the API key immediately as it will not be displayed again. Keep it on your Windows clipboard or paste it temporarily into a text editor to be ready for the next step.
    • NOTE 1: Even though you can never access an API key a second time, you can regenerate new ones as often as you want.
    • NOTE 2: The OpenAI API key interface supports advanced API key management on a project basis. However, the simple instructions here bypass the complex project-based API approach and should be adequate for most users.

Enter your API key into CotranslatorAI:

  1. Open the Tools window:
    • If you’ve been prompted to open the configuration dialog during installation, click “Yes” to open it so you can enter your API key.
    • If not prompted, navigate manually in CotranslatorAI to the Tools window: “Tools” > “Options”.
  2. Enter your API key:
    • In the “OpenAI API” tab, click “View/Update”
    • Paste your API key into the pop-up window and click “OK”.
  3. Select the AI model:
    • Choose the default model to use.
    • Click “Save” to apply the model choice.
    • NOTE: At the time of preparing these instructions, the best performing models are GPT-4o and GPT-4-mini. But if you haven’t yet put any money into your OpenAI enterprise account, then you’ll have to select the recommended model.
  4. Verify the API setup:
    • Test the setup by entering a prompt to verify it works. If you get a response, the setup was successful.

By following these steps, you will have successfully entered your OpenAI API key into CotranslatorAI and can begin using the AI immediately.
