You can compete against “free” MT: The real costs (and opportunity) – 20 May 2026 (AI Mastery for Translators Insights)

You can compete against “free” MT: The real costs (and opportunity) – 20 May 2026 (AI Mastery for Translators Insights)

In today’s edition:

  1. You can compete against “free” MT: The real costs (and opportunity)
  2. Get sharper AI help by asking right where you’re translating
  3. Unlock multi-tab prompting power in CotranslatorAI

Translators, friends, visionaries—lend me your tabs!

NAVIGATING THE PARADIGM SHIFT

You can compete against “free” MT: The real costs (and opportunity)

I just launched a new outsourced premium MT service for my LSP clients—starting at just $0.01/word.

I’m recommending that they resell this to their own clients at 2–3x that rate… and then upsell them to post-editing and, when it makes sense, to premium human translation.

This angle might just help some of my LSP clients grow their revenue exponentially. There’s no lack of content to translate out there; we just have to be smarter about how we sell it.

So why would clients pay for machine translation instead of using Google or DeepL’s free tools? Because in reality, that “free” MT comes bundled with hidden costs that stack up quickly:

1. The cost of data insecurity
2. The cost of unstructured multilingual content
3. The cost of segment-locked MT
4. The cost of data limits
5. The cost of time
6. The cost of unreliability
7. The cost of lost opportunity
8. The cost of unsustainability
9. The cost of workflow complexity
10. The cost of fixed overhead

Yesterday’s full treatise email is long. So don’t say I didn’t warn you. But if you want to trudge through the whole thing, here’s the link: https://cotranslatorai.com/you-can-compete-on-cost-against-google-translate-hear-me-out/

How am I providing this? With the GAIT workflow in CotranslatorAI, of course. This is the same iterative, context-leveraging workflow I teach in AI Mastery for Translators.

Pretty advanced stuff, but doable with a CAT tool… by an individual translator… at quality that exceeds anything from the Localization Illuminati.

This isn’t the first time I’ve talked about translators and small LSPs leveling up by selling smarter together. But now, the doors are open…. this is a live, real-world service, ready to fly….

I’ll keep you posted.

EFFECTIVE PROMPTING

Get sharper AI help by asking right where you’re translating

Here’s a quick tip I want to share from my daily workflow as a freelance translator.

Like many of you, I often keep a general chat tab open in CotranslatorAI for back-and-forth Q&A. It’s a handy way to ask the AI for general advice, quick clarifications and even wording options on the fly.

But if I really want targeted, project-relevant answers about the text I’m translating, I use the Ad-hoc prompt field in the current translation tab itself.

This makes the translation chain available to the AI, so I don’t need to explain the job or restate background info every time I type a question. The AI stays focused on exactly what’s already there, with no extra “noise” sneaking in from other topics.

This tiny switch saves time and makes the answers I get far more relevant to the work in front of me.

If you find yourself toggling between tabs or getting broad, unfocused replies, give this a try… and see how sharply the AI stays on topic.

COTRANSLATORAI TIP

Unlock multi-tab prompting power in CotranslatorAI

If this talk about juggling tabs and keeping different prompting sessions straight is unfamiliar, the first thing to check is which CotranslatorAI edition you’re using.

The multiple-tab workflow is only available in CotranslatorAI Advanced.

But if you do have Advanced and want to see what a multi-tab translation cockpit looks like in practice, I recommend taking the free Creative-Control Translation Flow mini-masterclass.

It’s bite-sized, hands-on and will walk you step-by-step through exactly how to set up and use multiple CotranslatorAI tabs the right way.

In fact, this is the same approach Anne and I taught in our prompting challenge in April. So if you missed that or just want to reinforce what you learned, the mini-masterclass is a perfect place to start.

You’ll find the course right here: https://cotranslatorai.com/creative-control-translation-flow/

Once you get the hang of it, keeping your prompting tasks separated and under control is a lot easier, and a real productivity boost.

Here’s to outsmarting the “free” shortcuts, one real translation at a time.

Always in your corner,
Steven (for the CotranslatorAI team)
