Wordsmiths in the wild,

NAVIGATING THE PARADIGM SHIFT

From resistance to relevance: Your move in the MTPE game

Many of you have made the transition to post-editing in your daily work. But not everybody.

If you’re paying attention to this newsletter, you know that I disparage the MTPE workflow all the time. But let’s face it… It’s a staple of our work and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

Just today a colleague reached out to me after slogging through MTPE on medical video captions. She’s a pro… years of experience, high standards. So of course, for this project she built a glossary, painstakingly adjusted register, considered all her options on each and every segment….

Surprise!

She couldn’t pick up the pace. Her attention to detail was working against her instead of for her. Can you relate?

The fact is that we have to focus on the value. Clients choose MTPE for speed and “good enough”. They don’t give a hoot about those final tweaks we often focus on as “professionals”.

And here’s another “inconvenient truth”:

Many LSPs have learned from experience that their regular translators will resist, drag their feet, or try to sabotage AI-driven projects. If your agency client sees you as an obstacle, how likely are they to offer you their next job?

After all, the market is demanding new options.

The best defense? Don’t wait to be nudged—lead. Offer “turn-key MTPE” at a discounted rate (I suggest half price!). Show clients you can deliver fast, clear, “good enough” work, and you’re on board with the workflow. That keeps you in the loop (and at the top of their lists). Save perfection for the premium projects, where it pays.

You can’t afford to keep your head in the sand. Take initiative, show you’re up for the shift, and stay in demand.

And now, let me tell you what “turn-key MTPE” is.

EFFECTIVE PROMPTING

What Is “turn-key MTPE”? Why it’s your new secret weapon

Think of it as the translator’s answer to today’s speed-obsessed, MT-driven market.

Before MTPE, clients frowned on anything labeled “draft” translation; they wanted their money’s worth and saw anything less as corner-cutting.

Now, it’s different.

MTPE puts the algorithm front and center. Suddenly, calling a job “MTPE” is honest, efficient… and exactly what many clients want. No more dancing around the use of AI, either.

Here’s where effective prompting changes the game. With CotranslatorAI and methods like GAIT and GAIM, you can control the draft. Either clean up their MT output, or generate your own from scratch––your prompts define the workflow.

Focus on big, obvious issues and keep moving. Ditch the endless polishing only you’d notice.

Clients win: they get usable, budget-friendly files on time.

You win: there’s clarity and less stress. You also get more work.

Even when you’re stuck in a client’s CAT tool, you can slip your prompts behind the scenes and keep things flowing.

Turn-key MTPE is simply this: clear terms, fast work, fair price, and smart prompting as your secret sauce.

That’s how you pack real value into every job… and keep the edge in a fast-evolving industry.

COTRANSLATORAI TIP

Stuck in your client’s interface? Here’s how CotranslatorAI gives you back control

Segment-by-segment MTPE inside platforms like XTM can feel frustrating, especially when you see the same errors repeating. Yet the tools lock you out of building a real TM or running your own workflows.

This is where CotranslatorAI shows its real strength.

With CotranslatorAI, you can load up your own set of targeted prompts, each designed to execute a specific fix. Think: “rewrite more formally,” “smooth out awkward phrasing,” “clarify terminology.”

The beauty here is control, even in the most locked-down CAT tools. Maybe you save your top five fixes for constant issues—register, flow, conciseness, style, or terminology—and just apply them as you go.

These micro-edits add up quickly and give you a reliable process, even with no anchor prompt or global automation.

Inside CotranslatorAI, don’t be shy about pinning your best prompts in the Quick Run menu or keeping several ready in browser tabs.

When client platforms break the CAT “promise,” CotranslatorAI restores some power to your side. It’s not about automating everything, but about taking on repetitive MTPE with your favorite AI moves, right where the work happens.

Can I ask you a favor? If you’re using AI (in CotranslatorAI or otherwise) to augment MTPE in a client’s online interface, would you email me and tell me about it? (I’m happy to keep your feedback anonymous.) Learning about what’s working for you will help us to refine our workflows and support our community even more. Just hit Reply on this email and tell me about it.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Steven for the team (kicking off every session with CotranslatorAI and a strong coffee)
