Many of you have made the transition to post-editing in your daily work. But not everybody.
If you’re paying attention to this newsletter, you know that I disparage the MTPE workflow all the time. But let’s face it… It’s a staple of our work and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
Just today a colleague reached out to me after slogging through MTPE on medical video captions. She’s a pro… years of experience, high standards. So of course, for this project she built a glossary, painstakingly adjusted register, considered all her options on each and every segment….
Surprise!
She couldn’t pick up the pace. Her attention to detail was working against her instead of for her. Can you relate?
The fact is that we have to focus on the value. Clients choose MTPE for speed and “good enough”. They don’t give a hoot about those final tweaks we often focus on as “professionals”.
And here’s another “inconvenient truth”:
Many LSPs have learned from experience that their regular translators will resist, drag their feet, or try to sabotage AI-driven projects. If your agency client sees you as an obstacle, how likely are they to offer you their next job?
After all, the market is demanding new options.
The best defense? Don’t wait to be nudged—lead. Offer “turn-key MTPE” at a discounted rate (I suggest half price!). Show clients you can deliver fast, clear, “good enough” work, and you’re on board with the workflow. That keeps you in the loop (and at the top of their lists). Save perfection for the premium projects, where it pays.
You can’t afford to keep your head in the sand. Take initiative, show you’re up for the shift, and stay in demand.
And now, let me tell you what “turn-key MTPE” is.
