The translation market is shifting, not collapsing – 18 June 2026 (AI Mastery for Translators Insights)

In today’s edition:

  1. The translation market is shifting, not collapsing.
  2. Is the AI losing focus on your big projects? Here’s the fix.
  3. Use Mark’s routines to improve your workflow.

To translators building faster, better workflows,

NAVIGATING THE PARADIGM SHIFT

The translation market is shifting, not collapsing.

I gained some useful perspectives from the discussion following my last Insights newsletter.

They were not the usual arguments about whether AI is destroying translation, or the equally unhelpful claim that nothing has changed.

Several of you started sharing about positive changes you are actually seeing in the market: well-paid MTPE requests, opportunities to negotiate on rates with large LSPs. I even heard from someone whose old client has come back because “good enough” was not good enough for their work after all.

The last few years have been brutal, and many of us have taken it on the chin. But those of you who are still reading this newsletter haven’t given up. And when I see how much is happening in our space with new workflows, new marketing approaches, and new perspectives, I am encouraged.

Some work is clearly being pushed into low-rate, platform-driven cleanup. I would not advise you to build a future around that segment. But other work is moving toward something more valuable: accountable, AI-assisted language expertise.

I am hopeful that work volumes will increase when the market sees the greater value we can now provide and when we are ready to take advantage of it.

In that context, your value is not merely that you can produce target-language sentences. Your value is judgment, technical skill, human accountability, responsiveness, flexibility…. and a bunch of other stuff we’ll each have to keep figuring out.

So when a job is labeled MTPE, do not react only to the label. Diagnose the work. What is the content? What is the risk? What quality is expected? Are you being paid to be a janitor of slop? Or has your client actually prepared the machine translation so that you can take responsibility for a final professional text? Can you actually improve their workflow for them?

If you want to see what colleagues shared about this, the discussion starts here: https://ai4languageprofessionals.groups.io/g/main/message/2797

And as I’ve started mentioning, I’m now offering a new premium MTPE workflow for boutique LSP clients, which I’m calling GAIT-Augmented MT & MTPE. It’s better in every way: https://cotranslatorai.com/gait-augmented-mt/

(Hint: if you’re an LSP, this is your cue to contact me.)

EFFECTIVE PROMPTING

Is the AI losing focus on your big projects? Here’s the fix.

Ever started an AI translation only to discover your terminology or instructions getting lost halfway through the project? This is pretty common. Why? The longer your AI dialogue, the more chance earlier details… like glossaries or instructions… will get drowned out or flat-out forgotten.

Most AI tools start dropping stuff as you go. And if you keep piling on segments, old glossaries, or random instructions, the AI forgets what you told it before. Even in CotranslatorAI, which doesn’t drop stuff, going too long inside a single AI dialogue both pushes up costs and overloads the AI’s little digital brain. In both scenarios, consistency flies out the window. What you want instead is focus.

Here’s what I do: For every new batch/document/project, I produce a new anchor prompt: new glossary, new instructions, and new “gold standard” reference translations. This stable set of instructions keeps the AI locked in on what matters now…

When you need to iterate, just update your anchor prompt, start a fresh dialogue, and let the laser-focused magic happen. You’ll get consistent, high-quality output and worry less about the AI drifting into the weeds.

For the full run-down on power anchor prompting based on a question from one of my favorite CotranslatorAI users this week, check out the FAQ at the bottom of this page: https://cotranslatorai.com/generative-ai-iterative-translation-gait/

COTRANSLATORAI TIP

Use Mark’s routines to improve your workflow.

A big thank-you to Mark Weatherall, a Chinese-to-English translator in Taiwan, for sharing the AutoHotkey scripts he uses with CotranslatorAI. They are in the Files section of AI4LanguageProfessionals for anyone to grab.

What I like about Mark’s setup is its restraint.

When he started with CotranslatorAI, he first created lots of prompts. Then he hit the real problem: he could not remember all the shortcuts. So he cut the system down to a few core routines.

Now, F12 sends selected Trados text to the CotranslatorAI ad hoc prompt for translation. F11 sends both source and target for review. He also uses quick refinement prompts such as: “How would a native speaker say this? Only show the output.”

Small? Yes. Trivial? Not if you repeat it 80 times before lunch.

This is the kind of workflow you can adapt to raise your own productivity and become more competitive. Not theory. Not one perfect workflow imposed from above. Just small automations that you can customize to fit your CAT tool, language pair, clients, and way of working.

And no, you do not have to be a programmer. Mark wrote these with help from ChatGPT.

That is AI Mastery for Translators: commanding the tools, not being commanded by them.

Keep refining the machine around your craft.

Steven, for the team!
