Yesterday I received a message from a registrant to my webclass. Her comments echo what some in our profession are thinking right now:
“Steven, I have to tell you that your optimism is fundamentally flawed: companies will do the translations themselves, as they already do, and they only call on translators as editors for truly important documents. So no, we have no future… Until clients realize that AI can’t capture the nuances or correct errors in an original the way we do… it’s hopeless. Especially in the field of medicine, which is mine. In the last project, a 34,600-word edition for 260 euros, the names of arteries, muscles, nerves, and other anatomical references were incorrect. Oh, false friends… Who cares? Nobody.”
While this perspective is understandable given the rapid changes in our industry, it’s important to remember that it’s not the whole story. Many translators are finding new ways to add value, adapt, and thrive—even as technology evolves.
Yes, some clients are turning to AI for speed and cost. But as long as the AI continues to make mistakes, there is a need for skilled professionals who can deliver accuracy, nuance, and expertise—especially in specialized fields.
I’m not backing down from my message: We can move the supply and demand curves in our favor with better tools and workflows… a new skillset!
That’s why tomorrow’s session is so timely.
We’ll be showcasing the GAIT workflow and the new features in CotranslatorAI 4.0, both designed to help you work more efficiently, deliver higher quality, and demonstrate the unique value you bring to your clients.
These tools are about putting you back in control and helping you compete where quality truly matters.
