You don’t need a scary new job title to survive AI today…. and maybe not ever

An associate wrote me today to say he’s intrigued by how translator/LSP business models are evolving… but that he’s exhausted by the implications.

If we’ve been translators our whole working lives, how do we re-educate and re-invest so we become global content creation consultants, governance advisors, or multi-lingual system/process managers?

What he (and many of us) really wants is to go back to the core of this career: language. Not machines. Not tools. Certainly not processes and governance (whatever that means).

There are no easy answers. But maybe all this talk about career transformation is getting a bit ahead of ourselves? I mean, those scary job titles aren’t even widespread in most organizations, especially small ones where we have our best opportunities.

Maybe a gradual approach makes more sense. The Getting Things Done methodology (David Allen) helps: break big projects into bite-sized next steps. You don’t need to see the whole future; just take the next step.

Many clients aren’t clamouring for language consultants yet anyway. In practice, they’re just “shoving documents through ChatGPT and hoping for the best.” For now, all we have to do is better than that. And we can often do that the old-fashioned way, but with innovative twists.

If we meet clients where they are and offer more value in the ways within their existing framework, we can build evolved, innovative service packages now and stay in the driver’s seat.

Then we can start thinking about… the next step.

My takeaway: the market is moving, but it hasn’t outpaced us yet. Stay engaged, keep upskilling (aren’t you glad for CotranslatorAI?), and stay informed (e.g., new book: YouGPT Before ChatGPT by Joachim Lepine). Don’t get discouraged—take the next step.

How to make AI obey your terminology (not its “average”)

You may have noticed that even when you know the right term, an LLM may default to what “sounds standard” in general usage.

A recent case study shared by Dave on AI4LanguageProfessionals shows this clearly with Swedish “subvention” in prescription drug contexts. Some translators expect “reimbursement/reimbursed,” while other Swedish/English drug-system sources use “subsidy/subsidized.”

Despite multiple prompts and different OpenAI models, including gpt-5.5, the outputs kept favoring “reimbursement/reimbursed.” The likely reason is that the model optimizes for broadly accepted idiomatic phrasing unless you constrain it with strong, explicit signals.

If you don’t provide “authority” in the prompt, the AI might infer what’s likely standard and override your intent.

What to do
1) Set context for the subject matter.
2) Provide gold standard segments that use your preferred wording exactly.
3) Add a glossary mapping difficult terms (source term → required target term).
4) Add a final compliance reminder: follow the glossary strictly; do not substitute alternative terms.

You can make the AI use the correct terminology, but you have to be deliberate about it.
